DISPUTE CREDIT REPORT - process overview
When you send a dispute letter to a credit bureau stating an item is wrong, the credit bureau has thirty (30) days to try and verify the information is correct. Many times this proves tough for them. If they can not do so, they must correct the information as you stated (or delete the item/trade line).
The dispute letter you send is very simple (see our sample letter section). You can send it regular mail however I recommend spending a couple dollars and send it with tracking so you know they received it and when the thirty (30) day clock has started.

Sometimes the credit bureau will send you a response letter. Normally you can ignore these, especially if they look like they are asking you for more information (like printing out your dispute again). They do this to trick you. If you submit more information on your dispute, they get 15 more days.
If you happen to dispute an item and it comes back as verified (no action taken), put that aside for a few months and try it again.

If you are going to dispute a negative item on your credit account that involves a collection agency, follow this process to help ensure success.
1. Send the collection agency a VOD letter (CRRR method). Once you have confirmation the letter was received, proceed to step two.
2. Send a dispute letter to the credit bureau, with tracking.
This does a couple of things. It locks up the collection agency from verifying the information with the credit bureau until they legally validate this debt to you. If they can not do this, or do not do so promptly, the credit bureau can not verify the information since they only have 30 days to do so. This would result in your request being completed. If the item comes back verified and the collection agency did not validate the debt, you now have them in violation of the law and can pursue legal action if desired.
